12 Tips For a Safe Holiday

12 Tips For a Safe Holiday

Friday 8th December, 2023

'Tis the season to be jolly, but it's also the season to stay safe! At TEAM Safety Services, we believe in celebrating the festive season with joy and caution, as many additional risks come with this season. Here are our 12 safety tips to ensure your holidays are filled with cheer and free from harm.

1: Keep the Fire in the Fireplace, Not in Your Tree

If you have a real Christmas tree, make sure to water it regularly. Dry trees are a significant fire hazard. A well-hydrated tree not only looks better but also ensures a safer holiday.

2: Climb with Care

When using step ladders to hang decorations and lights, remember not to climb too high. Maintain proper balance and stability by avoiding the top few steps.

3: Deck the Halls, Not the Lights

Decorations can help us get in the festive spirit, but they can also pose a fire risk. Avoid placing or attaching decorations to lights, as the heat generated can lead to a potential fire hazard. Keep the sparkle without the sparks!

4: Prevent Electrical Overload

Don't get carried away and overload your electrical outlets. Too many plugs can lead to overheating. Keep it safe by distributing your decorations across different outlets.

5: Keep Flames at Bay

Candles add warmth to the season, but keep them away from decorations and out of reach of children and pets. Alternatively, use LED candles to be extra safe. Nothing spoils the festive mood like a preventable fire accident.

6: Lights Out for Safety

Before heading to bed or leaving the house, remember to turn off tree lights, decorations, and portable space heaters. It's a simple step that ensures a safer celebration.

8: Cook Your Turkey, Not Your Fingers

If you're cooking with oil, especially for a turkey or goose, use deep cooking trays to minimise the risk of oil catching fire. And never put water on an oil fire! Safety in the kitchen is key to a happy holiday feast.

9: Sip Safely on Hot Drinks

When pouring hot drinks, exercise caution to avoid scalds. Enjoy the warmth of the season responsibly.

12: Cheers to Responsible Celebrations!

Drink responsibly during the festive period. Last year, December had the highest number of arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol across the UK, with police making a total of 3,581 arrests. Drink driving is extremely dangerous and leads to a severe risk of causing a fatal collision. Plan alternative travel if you're drinking. Your safety and the safety of others are worth celebrating responsibly.

We wish you a joyful, safe, and happy holiday from TEAM Safety Services! 🎄🎁🔒
