TEAM Talks: Is Your Health & Safety Training Actually Working?

Is Your Health & Safety Training Actually Working?

Most organisations provide health and safety training. Employees complete inductions, courses are attended, certificates are issued, records are stored; but there is a much more important question to ask:

Is the training actually working?

Because completing a course and creating a competent, safety-conscious workforce are not necessarily the same thing. Effective health and safety training should do more than demonstrate compliance. It should give people the knowledge, confidence, and practical understanding they need to recognise risks, make safer decisions, and know what to do when something goes wrong.

At TEAM Safety Services, we believe the real measure of successful training isn't simply whether somebody has completed it, it's whether they can apply what they've learned when it matters.

From compliance to competence

Training records and certificates provide important evidence that employees have received instruction, but training shouldn't become a tick-box exercise.

Ask yourself:

  • Could your employees explain the key risks associated with their role?
  • Would they recognise when something wasn't safe?
  • Do they understand why particular procedures and controls are in place?
  • Would they feel confident challenging unsafe behaviour?
  • Could they apply what they've learned to a situation that wasn't covered word-for-word in their training?

If the answer isn't a confident yes, there may be a gap between training completed and knowledge understood.

Competence develops when people have the right combination of knowledge, skills, training and experience for the work they are undertaking.

That means organisations need to think beyond simply when somebody last completed training and consider whether that training remains relevant, understood and reflected in everyday behaviour.

How much of your training would you remember today?

Think about the last training course you completed. How much could you confidently recall today?

Training can quickly lose its effectiveness when employees are presented with large amounts of information, lengthy presentations, or generic content that doesn't feel relevant to their role.

Good training should make complex information understandable and, importantly, memorable. That might mean using real-world examples, scenarios, visual learning, practical exercises, knowledge checks and opportunities for discussion rather than simply presenting information and expecting learners to retain it. The method also needs to suit the subject and the people being trained.

Sometimes a short, focused eLearning course is exactly what is needed. In other circumstances, a practical face-to-face session, demonstration or completely bespoke training programme will have a much greater impact.

There isn't one perfect way to deliver safety training, the important thing is choosing the right approach for the risk, workforce, and learning objective.

Training should reflect the workplace

A generic course can provide valuable foundation knowledge, but health and safety rarely exists in generic circumstances. Every organisation has different people, environments, processes and risks.

Construction workers arriving on site face very different hazards from employees working in an office. A housing professional responsible for resident evacuation arrangements requires different knowledge from somebody learning how to use display screen equipment safely. Training should reflect those differences.

That's why our eLearning library includes broader workplace training alongside more specialist courses. Our Low-Risk Workplace Safety Induction, for example, brings together essential topics including health and safety, display screen equipment, manual handling, ladder safety, fire safety and COSHH for environments such as offices, education, retail and light industrial workplaces.

For higher-risk environments, our Health and Safety Induction provides a more in-depth introduction to the hazards employees may encounter within construction and trade environments, including risk assessment method statements, PPE, work at height, noise, vibration, dust, and fire safety.

Our approach to digital learning has now received national recognition two years running at the British Training Awards, demonstrating the impact that engaging, practical, and accessible safety training can have across very different environments.

In 2025, TEAM Safety Services was named Construction Initiative of the Year for our Health & Safety Induction eLearning developed with McConnell. The programme was recognised for transforming essential occupational health and safety information into engaging online learning designed specifically for the people who need to put that knowledge into practice.

In 2026, we were named Public Sector Initiative of the Year for our resident-focused online learning solutions and eLearning developed to support housing providers, Responsible Persons and RPEEP assessors in understanding and responding to the latest fire safety legislation.

The subject matter may be very different, but our approach remains the same:

Make important safety information clear, engaging, relevant and, most importantly, useful in the real world.

Sometimes people need to understand one subject really well

As responsibilities change, legislation develops and new requirements are introduced, employees may need to build much deeper knowledge in particular areas.

This is where targeted upskilling becomes particularly important.

Our Building Safety Act Awareness eLearning, for example, helps learners understand the Building Safety Act 2022, higher-risk buildings, the Building Safety Regulator, Gateways, the Golden Thread and the responsibilities of dutyholders and Accountable Persons.

Similarly, our award-winning Resident Emergency Evacuation Plans eLearning has been developed to help those involved in fire safety and housing understand the requirements surrounding Resident Emergency Evacuation Plans (REEPs) legislation and how they should be approached in practice.

The purpose isn't simply to tell somebody that legislation or guidance exists. It is to help them understand what it means for their role and what they may need to do differently as a result.

When eLearning isn't enough

Digital learning provides enormous benefits. It can deliver consistent information across large workforces, allow employees to learn flexibly and provide organisations with an effective way of managing and recording training.

But some subjects benefit from something different.

TEAM has delivered face-to-face health and safety and fire safety training to organisations for more than 15 years, from established accredited courses to practical sessions developed around specific workplace risks. Our trainers aren't simply delivering information from a presentation; they are health and safety and fire safety professionals with extensive practical experience behind them.

That experience allows training to move beyond theory. Questions can be explored, scenarios can be discussed, real examples can be used, and learners can understand how the principles they are being taught translate into the situations they may actually encounter at work.

What if the course you need doesn't exist?

Sometimes an off-the-shelf course simply isn't the right answer.

An organisation may have a particular process, risk, policy or learning objective that requires something more specific. That's where bespoke training can make a significant difference.

We work directly with organisations to understand what their people actually need to learn before developing training around their working environment, responsibilities, and risks.

A recent example of this is our work with M Group, where our TEAM developed a bespoke Accident and Incident Investigation training programme.

Rather than adapting a generic course, the programme was developed around the organisation's requirements to give delegates practical skills they could apply when investigating real workplace incidents.

The programme has since received IOSH approval, providing external recognition of the quality and standard of the training. It demonstrates something we believe strongly at TEAM:

The best training starts with understanding the people who need to use it.

Real-world experience makes better training

One of the biggest advantages of learning from practising safety professionals is that training is informed by what is actually happening in workplaces. Our TEAM works across health and safety, fire safety, risk assessment, consultancy, audits, inspections, incident investigation, building compliance and much more.

We see the challenges organisations face, we see where procedures work well, where misunderstandings arise and where seemingly small gaps in knowledge can create much larger risks. Those experiences feed directly into the way we develop and deliver training.

Our eLearning courses are developed in-house with our own health and safety and fire safety specialists, combining technical expertise with engaging digital learning. Our training has already supported thousands of learners across hundreds of organisations.

The aim should always be to turn technical safety information into knowledge people can understand, remember and use.

When did you last review your training?

Training shouldn't end when the certificate is issued. Workplaces change, people change roles, guidance and legislation develop, new equipment and processes are introduced, and knowledge naturally fades over time. Organisations should therefore periodically review not only whether employees have completed required training, but whether it remains appropriate and effective.

Consider asking:

  • Is our training relevant to the risks people actually face?
  • Do employees understand what they've been taught?
  • Can they apply that knowledge confidently?
  • Have responsibilities, legislation or working practices changed since the training was completed?
  • Are there areas where refresher or more specialist training would improve competence?
  • Most importantly: If something went wrong tomorrow, would our people know what to do?

If you're not sure, it may be time to look beyond the training record.

Make training count

Effective health and safety training isn't about collecting certificates, it's about creating safer decisions, safer behaviours, and ultimately, safer workplaces.

Whether that's through an accessible workplace induction, specialist eLearning, practical on-site training or a completely bespoke programme developed around your organisation, the goal should always be knowledge that can be put into practice.

At TEAM Safety Services, our training is developed and delivered by experienced health and safety and fire safety professionals who understand the realities behind the subjects we teach.

From our award-winning eLearning and specialist upskilling courses to accredited face-to-face training and bespoke programme development, we can help you identify the right approach for your workforce.

TEAM Talks: Why Warmer Weather Increases the Danger of Legionella

As temperatures begin to rise across the UK, many organisations will focus on keeping buildings cool and comfortable. However, summer conditions can also create the perfect environment for Legionella bacteria to grow, particularly within water systems and air conditioning units.
Understanding this seasonal risk is essential for anyone responsible for managing buildings, facilities, or water systems.
